Here’s An Opinion On:

Some special skills are required to be able to design a website. However, it is not enough that you know how to deal with XHTML and CSS. You also need to know which techniques work and which ones do not. You also need to know what should be placed on a website and what should be avoided. Here are some ways for you to avoid having a crappy web design. These can help you whether you are planning to design your website or hire a professional to do it for you.

Avoid Confusion

Most Internet visitors are easily annoyed by complicated web layout. Your home page should be very simple yet attractive and informative. It can have a welcome message and links to where the visitors can find more details. Make sure to provide easy navigation. You should avoid cyclical links. Your homepage should also have tabs, which can be clicked to go to specific pages. The tabs to your inner pages should be easy to find so the best choice is either at the top of the home page just below the site title or at the side. You should also ensure that everything could be easily found. For business websites, your visitors will surely be curious about the shipping and returns policy. Your products should also be grouped together properly.

Avoid Inconsistency

Most websites opt to have the same background, font and colour of texts, etc. They prefer to be consistent because it is convenient for Internet users. There should be consistency on the colours. You can also use different colours but make sure that they complement each other. In addition, being consistent on the colour scheme and the over all design will help viewers know that they are still in the same website.

Avoid Clutter

Each website can have several pages wherein related contents can be placed. Have you ever seen a website where everything is in one page? They will surely be unappealing and most viewers would close it immediately. Good websites will have one or two images or a video and some texts to support them. The design and layout should also highlight interesting contents that will stop people from leaving the page. You should definitely avoid clutter and put only related contents (i.e. videos, photos and texts) in a page.

Maintain Simplicity

People love simple but very informative or functional websites. For instance, your Contact Us page should be very simple and will not have any big pictures. It can simply have your phone number and email address.

Accept Criticisms

Sometimes, it will require several revisions before one could get a website that will pass his and other people’s standards. In fact, your website may appear to be the best for you but not for others. You need to be open for criticisms but you do not need to adhere to each of them. For instance, a website visitor may suggest that you put the live chat feature on the right side because it is hardly seen below the video and text content. It is an acceptable suggestion since it is obviously a way to enhance your website.
