The Importance Of Preventative Or General Dentistry

Submitted by: Wendell Demont

It is recommended that you see a dentist atleast twice a year for a usual check-up. As an average college student, I found that a little difficult to accomplish. I traveled four hours to attend a university which meant that my family dentist was quite a trip away. I had made a goal that I would try and visit my dentist twice while I was a away for school when I came home to visit. Turns out that dentists aren’t open on holidays, which is when I was usually home. School got busy and I didn’t make it a priority to come home to get a check-up. I turns out that I ended up with an unbearable tooth ache to deal with the last two weeks of school, including finals week. After visiting my dentist to get the tooth taken care of, I found out that it could have been completely avoided if I had come in for my usual check-up. This experience taught me the importance of preventative or general dentistry.

You probably have a friend that only brushes their teeth once a week and hasn’t seen their dentist in years, and their teeth are just fine. Don’t let them influence your decision of seeing your dentist regularly. They are the exception, you are the rule. For many, tooth decay sets in very rapidly, so even six months is quite the wait. Even if you are not experiencing any pain, there may be some minor problems that your dentist can prevent from progressing any further. Check with your local general dentistry to find out which time period between check-ups is best for you.

Even those who don’t feel physical appearance is at the top of their priority list should still consider visiting their dentist every six months. Having a clean smile isn’t just pretty, but healthy. Many people don’t realize how important their oral hygiene is until it is causing them problems. A healthy mouth is essential for eating, smiling and communication in general. When you are confident in your smile, you are more comfortable meeting new people and trying new things. If you aren’t happy with the way your smile looks, than the professionals in general dentistry can help you out.

While dental cleanings are important for preventative reasons and feel great, they aren’t the reason most people visit their dentist. Your dentist has gone to school and has studied general dentistry for many years to get to the position he is now. He is trained to spot tooth decay, cavities and any other oral irregularities that could later cause you problems. The dental X-rays they will be taking can detect things that you wouldn’t notice until it is too late and are causing you pain.

I recently attended Dr. W. Michael Black’s office in Orem and I was very pleased by his office and staff. I could see that there was more than just general dentistry happening. The dentist asked me specific and thorough questions about my teeth to make my check-up positive and successful. My treatment was quick and painless, unlike many other experiences I’ve had. I am sure that I’ll be returning soon.

The atmosphere of his office was calm and professional. He had the latest equipment to allow the best work to be done on my teeth. It wasn’t crowded and I was able to start my appointment on time. They asked me which movie I’d like to watch while I was being worked on and they even brought me a warm blanket when I got chilly. This was definitely not just a general dentistry office. I would recommend them to anyone.
